Buy and Hold vs. Moving Average ETF Investing(most recent 12 weeks)
Greetings ETF Investors. Up, down, up, down, up so the market goes. Last week the S&P moved up over 25 points.
The buy and hold ETF investor made about $457 in the balanced ETF portfolio. His total portfolio is now valued at $14,913 and the total gain is 48.5% since we starting tracking this portfolio in March of 2009.
The moving average ETF investor gained about $259 for the week. His portfolio is now valued at $10,917 (same balanced portfolio). He has gained 8.7% for the same time period.
As I've mentioned, these wide weekly swings are more of the norm now.
Moving Average Update - significant changes required...
Each week, the moving average investor compares the 50 day MA against the 200 day MA to see if he should sell (or buy) any of the 10 ETFs in the balanced ETF portfolio.
After reviewing the 10 ETFs for this week, there are two more ETFs to sell, the Vanguard Pacific ETF, symbol VPL and iShares Barclays 1-3 Year Credit Bond, symbol CSJ. That means that the moving average investor is now long in 7 of the 10 ETFs from the balanced portfolio. He is not invested in:
Vanguard European Stock ETF, symbol VGK
Vanguard Pacific ETF, symbol VPL
iShares Barclays 1-3 Year Credit Bond, symbol CSJ
