ETF Investing Strategies: Buy and Hold vs. Moving Average Week Ending 12-4-09

Nice week for the S&P 500. The market closed up 4 out of 5 days last week and overall was up 15 points. Not surprisingly, both the buy and hold ETF investor and the moving average ETF investor were happy this past week. Both portfolios stand at all time highs.

The buy and hold ETF investor gained about $440 for the week. His total portfolio now sits at an all time high of $15,045.60 for an outstanding 49.8% gain since this project started 40 weeks ago.

The moving average ETF investor is also at his all time high and gained about $285 for the week. He has $10,965.55 invested in the balanced ETF portfolio. He has gained 9.2% thus far.

Most Recent 12 Weeks of Performance

As a reminder, the buy and hold investor went long in all 10 ETFs from the balanced ETF portfolio in March, 2009. The moving average investor waited for the 50 day moving average to rise above the 200 day moving average before going long so it took him a lot longer to be invested in all 10 ETFs.
