ETF Investing Strategies: Buy and Hold vs. Moving Average Week Ending 10-23-09

The S&P 500 was like a roller coaster this week, up, down, up, down. For the week the index lost about 9 points. Not bad considering the S&P 500 lost about 16 points on Friday alone.

Not surprisingly, our two investors lost money this past week. The buy and hold investor lost about $100 for a total portfolio of $14,711. This represents a 46.5% gain since going long in the balanced ETF portfolio back in March.

The moving average investor lost about $70 from the same portfolio. His total value is now at $10,740 for a 6.9% gain. Both investors started with about $10,000 ($10,044 to be exact).
