Dismal returns for funds over the past year

I was checking out Kiplinger.com and came across a ranking of the top Large Company Growth Mutual Funds for the past 1 year (other years included as well). What is staggering is the returns; they are all negative. I guess in a way the average investor like you and me never really had a chance this last year or so.
